TAXES TAXES TAXES

The Democrats need to realize that they should just keep it simple. It is unbelievable that McCain and Palin just get away with the false "Obama will raise taxes for EVERYONE" line of attack despite Obama's clear pronouncement about reducing taxes for middle class and poor americans in his acceptance speech. That's because Democrats never give a consistent unified "We also try to minimize taxes" message. Have you ever noticed that property taxes in republican areas are really not any lower than the Democratic party controlled areas for comparable locales? I have not done any serious research on it, but it seems that way to me.

Even freaking Obama will say that he will reduce taxes in one breath but then give equal emphasis in time and tone to "i will increase capital gains". Why the hell do you do that? Just mention it quietly on rare occasions. Just keep it simple. Make your message "I will reduce taxes for nearly everyone" and do the little footnote thing about higher taxes for only certain segments. I have seen Obama get a little more forceful in recent weeks in emphasizing the lower taxes thing. But over the years, the DEmocrats have done a lousy job in fighting for lower taxes that it is ingrained in people's mind that we stand for higher taxes even when the Presidential candidate has veered away from such a tired old approach.

It doesn't help that quite a few democrats have advocated higher taxes in the past making it easier for Republicans to confuse the people with distortions.  Hell, even on this blog, I differ with many of the readers on this issue. Let us get this straight. The deficit will not be cleared by just raising taxes. Congress will just find a way to increase spending with the new found money. The key is to drastically cut spending.

NOw where do we cut spending? The republicans serve their constituents well by fighting for their causes and enrich Halliburton. The DEmocrats do the same with their constituents, many of who are not as rich or fortunate as Halliburton and the assistance is to a lesser degree. But there is one HUGE difference. Republicans will not ask for higher taxes in most cases. They will do their best to kill off the Democratic Party programs. IN an ideal two party system, the Democrats should be doing the same with the other party's programs. Instead, they offer meek resistance and then turn to the tired old "well we need more taxes" mantra. So what ends up happening is the republicans get away with their programs with very little going to much needed liberal programs.  How about curbing spending to the minimum(and with the predicted majorities, make most of the cuts in useless areas such as oil subsidies, war on drugs and other useless bullshit wars). Once you have proven to the taxpayers that you can spend responsibly, raise taxes if you must. Do not ask for higher taxes whe you do not fulfill your duties as responsible representatives that care about how our taxes are spent.

P.S.: Sorry for posting this accidentally on the front page. I realized it and made it a diary instead of an entry.

And your points are well-taken. This is quite possibly the biggest reason I am a Republican. I am truly amazed by the reasoning here - what has made this country strong and successful? Business. What will keep this country strong and successful? Business. When you tax them out-of-business, who loses? The people that need jobs. You failed to mention the inflationary increase in the minimum wage which is essentially another tax on business. It certainly didn't help the economy, didn't help employees who didn't produce more to earn more, but increased their bills. Businesses are treading water now and you want to tax them more? Obama needs to take an economics class.

Re: TAXES TAXES TAXES (none / 0)

I think Democrats need to court small business owners more. Personally, I think they need to lower the deduction for entertainment and food for businesses. ANd they need to eliminate any deduction for those box seats at sporting events. If the companies want to court people on their own dime at a corporate box in a stadium, let them do it at their own total expense.

I would also get rid of a bunch of subsidies for some businesses and enforce tougher discipline in reining in extensions on those "temporary" subsidies.

I am mixed on the minimum wage. In a lot of cases, it is self regulatory. But without a minimum wage, you will just end up with more unions(just imagine the backlash). And we know how much Republicans love unions!

Heh. But I did notice one funny thing in the convention. Palin was proudly hailing her husband's membership in some union. Weren't these people bashing unions during the campaign?

Re: TAXES TAXES TAXES (none / 0)

I think the minimum wage will have its share of victims in the small business world in terms of losing some flexibility. But overall I think it does more good than harm. It avoids workers in small town with few options to be exploited by a big corporation.

I don't think republicans have been capitalism's best friends either. Capitalism works best when the markets are transparent and free flowing. I think transparency has been lacking. Unfortunately, the behavior of many execs has created a situation where they need a watchdog.

Re: TAXES TAXES TAXES (none / 0)

Businesses aren't treading water now with record profits. Business isn't making this country when it closes plants here and idles workers sending all their operations overseas and moves their headquarters to offshore countries that have no taxes while we still give them huge tax breaks. Those are the facts, and Republicans created the monster.  And that's the reason you are one of them?  Pfffft..

Hell's bells, even the GOP didn't have to crucify Eisenhower's record in order to make Reagan their 'saint'. We can have two great ones, you know?

Re: TAXES TAXES TAXES (2.00 / 1)

If Palin and McCain don't like to be taxed..then why did they not have a problem shifting huge amounts of other people's tax money to their own states? So...let me get this...they don't like to be taxed...but they have no problem having other people get taxed?

Re: TAXES TAXES TAXES (2.00 / 1)

And we need to hit the republicans hard on those points to avoid giving them the upperhand on this issue.

I am not against raising taxes. But politicians of the party need to do their part in eliminating most pork before raising taxes.

I am not a knee jerk small government guy. But I do believe a government has to prove itself at the current level before it can grow.

Re: TAXES TAXES TAXES (none / 0)

The Tax Policy Center had a diagram which comparatively broke down the potential tax breaks for different economic classes.  It needs to be spread around.  Let me see if I can find it.
